Birgu goes dark and candlelit from the 11th to the 13th. A note on the weekend, and eating either side of it.
From 11 to 13 October, Birgu turns its lights off. Candles in the windows, along the walls, down the alleys of one of the oldest cities on the island — Birgu by Candlelight is the best-looking night Malta puts on all year.
Make a day of it, not an evening
The mistake is treating it as a quick visit. Birgu deserves the afternoon: the Three Cities, the waterfront, the streets before the candles are lit. Which means by the time you are back across the harbour you are properly hungry and it is properly late.
Our kitchen is still going until a quarter to midnight, and October is when the slow dishes come back — rabbit, bragoli, soups. The right food for a night spent walking around in the dark.
Candlelight all evening, and something braised at the end of it.
