If you are staying in St Julian's, you have already seen Paceville: neon, noise, and a hundred menus with the same nine photographs on them. It is what the area is known for and it is not entirely unfair.
What nobody mentions is that there is another Paceville two streets over, and it is about forty years older.
How to find the real thing
Look for a menu with fewer than fifteen main courses. Look for rabbit — stuffat tal-fenek takes hours and cannot be faked, so a kitchen that cooks it properly is telling you something. And listen: if the tables around you are speaking Maltese, you have found it.
We have been on Triq Paceville for over a decade, around the corner from the Vivaldi, cooking the food of Gozo and Malta. The menu is written in Gozitan with the English underneath, which tells you most of what you need to know about who it was written for.
